</div>
I have always been intrigued by those polymer clay pieces that use thin
slices of a intricately crafted polymer clay canes. The technique was
originally used in making glass making and is called millefiori, which ,
in Italian, means thousand flowers. Pieces of this detailed glass work
have been dated to ancient Roman, Phoenician, and Alexanderian times.
The technique was lost by the 18th century but rediscovered sometime in
the 19th century.<br />
<br />
I don't know who first tried to reproduce those beautiful glass beads
using polymer clay, but they were a genius. The process is long and
involved, using rods of conditioned polymer clay in a myriad of shapes,
round, square, triangular, and so on. These rods are then wrapped with
thin sheets of polymer clay and stacked together to form one unit.<br />
<br />
Once the image is completed, the entire piece is rolled, squeezed and
manipulated until it is the desired size. The messy ends are cut off
to reveal a miniature masterpiece inside! Then, thin slices are cut and
applied to the base piece of polymer clay.<br />
<br />
I've tried my hand at making some polymer clay canes. I have never been
too successful. Most of the time my slices get distorted, smeared or
are of varying thickness and are useless for the project I envisioned.
I keep trying, though, because I am fascinated by the process.<br />
<br />
Some of the polymer clay artists from the Polymer Clay Smooshers Guild on Art Fire <b>have</b> mastered this difficult technique. Below are some pieces from those talented artists.<br />
<br />
This <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/dreamweaversdesigns/2484114/flat_modcane_pendant/handmade/jewelry/pendants/polymer_clay">Flat Modcane Pendant by Dream Weaver's Designs</a> is a wonderful example of the intricate pattern you can achieve using a relatively simple cane.<br />

I just recently discover the Zentangle method and I am itching to try it, both on paper and in clay.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/9/129/66129/6266129/6266129/large/black_and_white_zentangle_polymer_clay_wrist_cuff_2d9bdb27.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="165" src="http://www.artfire.com/uploads/product/9/129/66129/6266129/6266129/large/black_and_white_zentangle_polymer_clay_wrist_cuff_2d9bdb27.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>

Conditioning polymer clay redistributes the ingredients in the clay that may have settled during storage. If you don't properly condition your clay your finished piece may be weaker and more prone to breakage. You know your clay is properly conditioned when you can fold it without having it crack.<br />
To condition your clay start by cutting the block of clay into thin slices using a straight blade. Roll over each slice with a clay roller, fold it in half and repeat several times until it starts to become softer. Continue conditioning with your hands, smooshing, rolling, and folding the clay until it becomes warm and pliable. You can condition the clay completely by hand or finish conditioning it with a pasta machine. Be sure to always insert the clay through the pasta machine fold first to prevent air bubbles from becoming trapped between the layers. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a short video showing how to condition polymer clay.</div>
Softer clays such as Sculpey III and Pardo can usually be conditioned by hand by simply kneading them for a few minutes. Using a pasta machine makes quick work of conditioning clay and you can usually find pasta machines for a reasonable price in most craft stores and online sites that sell polymer clay.<br />
Firmer clays can be crumbly and difficult to condition. With these clays you need to start warming the clay and conditioning by hand before trying to run them through the pasta machine to complete the conditioning process. One way to soften the clay is to mix in small amounts of
translucent clay. However, if you add too much you may change the color
of the clay. You can also add a few drops of liquid clay and knead it
in thoroughly. Only add a few drops at a time or you will end up with a
goopy mess! Yet another way to warm your clay in preparation for
conditioning is to place wrapped blocks of clay on a Ziploc bag filled
with 1/2 cup of rice that's been microwaved for 30-45 seconds. The rice
will stay warm for up to an hour. You may want to put a cloth between
the bag of rice and your clay to prevent overheating. You don't want
the clay to begin curing. One method I use to warm stiff clay is to sit
on the clay or put it in my pocket (wrapped in it's original package or
in a bag). Just never put polymer clay in the microwave for any
reason.<br />
The heat of your hands can make some clays softer and softer while you're working with them. If your clay becomes too soft and difficult to work with you may need to set it aside for a while and let it cool off. Some people even put it in the refrigerator for a short time.<br />
You can make soft clay firmer by a process called leaching, which
removes some of the plasticizers from the clay. While leaching will
make the clay firmer to work with, it can also lessen the strength of
the finished piece. To leach your clay sandwich thin pieces of polymer
clay between several layers of printer paper. Place your "clay
sandwich" on your work tile and set a heavy book on top. Check your
clay every so often until the desired firmness is achieved. This
process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Replace the
paper when it appears saturated. It will look like a grease stain on
the paper. And remember not to leave unbaked clay on painted,
varnished, or lacquered surfaces, as the clay will damage them.<br />
When working with different colors of clay start with the lightest colors first whenever possible. Light colored clays can be difficult to keep clean since they will pick up anything on your hands, tools, or work surface. This post has more tips on working with light colored clay: <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/blog_post/CreativeCritters/6994/tips_for_sculpting_with_white_and_light_colored_polymer_clay" target="_blank">Tips For Sculpting With White and Light Colored Polymer Clay</a>. Baby wipes work well for cleaning your hands not only in between colors, but every so often while you're working with your light color. I also wipe down my tools to be sure there are no bits of darker clay on them. Just be sure your wipes are lint free and don't leave fine particles on your hands, as these will quickly transfer to the clay.<br />
My preferred work surface is a ceramic tile. Tiles come in a variety of sizes and are fairly inexpensive at home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes. They're smooth and easy to clean and don't affect the clay. The tiles are nearly impervious to scratching and can go right from your work table to the oven. I have tiles in several sizes for different sized projects.<br />
If you don't want your clay to stick to your tile parchment type deli paper works quite nicely. Placing your project on this allows you to move it around without distorting it. I find this very useful when cutting out leaves and flowers. I can cut them out on the paper and easily remove them to place them on my sculpture. you can find this deli paper, also known as patty paper, in bulk at grocery warehouses and restaurant supply stores. Baking on this paper also helps prevent shiny spots from forming on the bottom of your piece.<br />
<br />I hope these tips have helped you learn some of the basics of working with polymer clay!<br />

I do love Autumn- the smell of the air changes, there's a bit of nip to the breeze in the evenings, and of course the colors of the leaves begin to change. This will be my first Autumn in Prescott Arizona and I'm looking forward to seeing how it will be different from the Autumns in Ohio, which I've known all my life. In the spirit of the change of seasons I wanted to showcase some of the beautiful Autumn creations from the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild.<br />

Challenge! So you can choose between Halloween or Autumn Colors (or do
an entry for each them, or mix the themes together). The options are
endless! <br />
For those of you who aren't familiar with the Smooshers
Challenges let me tell you the rules. <span style="font-weight: bold;">In order to participate you need to have an active shop on<a href="http://www.artfire.com/" target="_blank"> ArtFire</a> and be a member of the <a href="http://www.artfire.com/guilds/polymer_clay_smooshers" target="_blank">Polymer Clay Smooshers guild</a>. Participation is not mandatory, but it is a great way to bring in views and potential sales for your shop. </span><br />
<span style="color: red; font-weight: bold;">You're allowed
to enter 2 items, and they must incorporate polymer clay and be relevant
to the theme. You need to have them listed in your ArtFire shop by the deadline and
then post the link to your entries in this thread: </span> <a href="http://www.artfire.com/guild_forums/view_thread/2061">http://www.artfire.com/guild_forums/view_thread/2061</a><br />
<br />
There is no "winner" for these challenges, just the benefit of being
promoted, the opportunity to show off your work, and the chance to try
new things with polymer clay. These Challenges are meant to be fun for everyone involved ;-) I'll promote the Challenge and all the
entries on the <a href="http://polymerclaysmooshers.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_BLANK">Smooshers blog</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/PolymerClaySmooshers" rel="nofollow" target="_BLANK">Facebook</a>, the <a href="http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=forums&op=view_category&cid=7" rel="nofollow" target="_BLANK">ArtFire forums</a>, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/creativecritters" rel="nofollow" target="_BLANK">YouYube</a>.
It would be very beneficial if everyone else promoted the challenge as
well, on whatever sites you use. Even if you don't enter a piece or belong to the Smooshers guild, you
can still support the guild by promoting the Challenge ;-) <br />
<br />
<span style="color: red; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;">The deadline for entries for the Halloween/ Autumn Colors Challenge is October 3rd</span>, so that will give us a month to complete and list our entries. If anyone has any questions, just let me know. You can contact me through <a href="http://creativecritters.artfire.com/" target="_blank">CreativeCritters</a> by using the Contact Artisan link under my avatar. Let's have fun with this! :-)<br />

And since Halloween is the topic of the Blog Roll this week I thought this would be a great time to showcase some of the fun Halloween items the members of the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild have listed in their shops. Personally, I love Halloween and all things related to the holiday: black cats, witches, magic, skeletons (preferably glow in the dark), bats, and all those other spooky things ;-) When I was a kid I loved dressing up and going out trick or treating with my brothers. And I've had several black cats who all seemed to have a little extra magic, especially on Halloween. As an artist I love sculpting all sorts of Halloween themed pieces. This time of year seems to really fire up my creative energies (I think it's all the magic in the air)! And looking through the shops of my fellow Smooshers, I can see I'm not the only one inspired by Halloween!<br />
Here's a Winged Skull Cuff Bracelet from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/MortimerInc" target="_blank">Mortimer Inc</a>- wicked cool!<br />

And this Witchy Mouse with BOO Banner from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/QuernusCrafts" target="_blank">Quernus Crafts</a> is absolutely adorable!<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvKh5bpBKpw/UEAQGdQ9shI/AAAAAAAAAZU/my_HvE56sB0/s1600/polymer-clay.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvKh5bpBKpw/UEAQGdQ9shI/AAAAAAAAAZU/my_HvE56sB0/s1600/polymer-clay.png" /></a></div>
<br />
The two most important rules concerning polymer clay are 1) Don't eat it, and 2) Don't burn it. Beyond these basic rules there are several more specific safety and usage issues.<br />
<br />
1) Don't leave unbaked polymer clay on painted, varnished, or lacquered surfaces as it can damage the finish. (I learned this the hard way after I ruined a dresser). Once the clay is baked it becomes inert and this is no longer an issue.<br />
<br />
2)Although polymer clay is rated as nontoxic it's not recommended for use with food. If you use kitchen tools for working with polymer clay those tools need to remain dedicated to use with polymer clay only. Never use anything made of polymer clay for utensils or dishware that will come into contact with food. You can, however, use polymer clay to embellish handles or other parts of dishes or utensils that won't come into contact with food.<br />
These polymer clay covered wine glasses from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/TTEDesigns" target="_blank">TTE Designs</a> are an example of how to safely embellish glasses with polymer clay. Please note that polymer clay covered items need to be hand washed and dried.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/TTEDesigns/4300321/Artistic_Wine_Stems/Housewares/Dining_Room/Other" target="_blank"><img alt="" height="320" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--150000--122698_product_733081997_2_thumb_large.jpg" width="187" /> </a><br />
<br />
3)Be sure to wash your hands after working with polymer clay, especially if you'll be handling food. Pumice based waterless hand cleaner or hand sanitizer works well to dissolve polymer clay residue. Use soap and water to wash away the hand cleaner.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.criticaltool.com/grit-pumice-waterless-hand-cleaner-12-cs-682014" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jIozD0vcBx0/UEARD6tfyXI/AAAAAAAAAZc/V00GX4Dt8eI/s200/hand-cleaner.png" width="176" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
pumice based waterless hand cleaner </div>
<br />
<br />
4)Never leave baking clay unattended as it can burn or scorch if you're not paying attention. Ovens, especially toaster ovens, don't always hold their temperature reliably. You should also always use an oven thermometer to be sure your oven is set at the proper temperature. I know my own oven is about 50 degrees off, so I have to set the temperature accordingly. If your clay looks like it is burning or smoking, turn off the oven and take the clay outside to cool off. Be sure to ventilate the room so the fumes can thoroughly dissipate.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RWC2JH-0OoI/UEAR7X3g4pI/AAAAAAAAAZk/ZNC4BkyV9U8/s1600/burned-clay.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RWC2JH-0OoI/UEAR7X3g4pI/AAAAAAAAAZk/ZNC4BkyV9U8/s200/burned-clay.png" width="139" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
burnt clay </div>
<br />
<br />
5)When carving, dry sanding, drilling, or machine buffing polymer clay be sure to wear a dust mask and protective eye wear. The clay can be very dusty and you don't want to breathe that dust or get it in your eyes.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>Extra Tips</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Heat Guns </u></b>:<u><b> </b></u>Heat Guns reach temperatures much higher than those recommended for baking clay, making it possible to burn the clay. To start, clean your work area of any uncured clay and any flammable materials before starting to work with your heat gun. If you have long hair tie it back and make sure any loose clothing won't get in the way. You do NOT want to set yourself on fire! Hold the heat gun 3 to 5 inches away from the clay and keep moving it in circles until the clay is cured. Be aware that the tip of the gun will be extremely hot after use. Give the gun at least 10 to 15 minutes to cool off before storing it. And be absolutely sure to keep pets away from the heat gun while you're using it and while it's cooling off. The last thing you want is for your cat or dog to get burned!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>Shiny Clay:</b></u> Your cured clay can develop shiny spots when you use a smooth baking surface such as a ceramic tile. In some cases this won't have any effect on your piece, but it's easy to remove the shine if you prefer. Simply use a 1,000 grit or higher sandpaper and lightly sand the spot until the shine is gone.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>Baking Thin Pieces of Clay:</b></u> Since paper can curl when baking it can work better to bake very thin pieces of clay directly on your tile. You can also use a book to weight down the clay and flatten it after baking.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I hope these tips were helpful and will make your polymer clay adventures a bit safer!</div>

You can create faux gemstones, faux wood, faux ivory, and just about any other faux item you can imagine. Today I'll be featuring some faux creations in polymer clay made by members of the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild on ArtFire.<br />
I love this nature inspired faux bone pendant from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/ChristinaKosinskiDesigns" target="_blank">Christina Kosinski Designs</a>. The pendant was hand formed in a faux bone polymer clay and has many
leaves and flowers surrounding a face in the style of the leaf man or tree
man.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/ChristinaKosinskiDesigns/3946930/Leafman_Style_Polymer_Clay_Pendant_Faux_Bone_Large_Art_Piece/Jewelry/Pendants/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Leafman Style Polymer Clay Pendant Faux Bone Large Art Piece" itemprop="image" src="http://static.artfire.com/uploads/product/0/930/46930/3946930/3946930/large/leafman_style_polymer_clay_pendant_faux_bone_large_art_piece_4faa05c9.jpg" /> </a><br />
This faux wood pendant from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/creativesisters" target="_blank">Creative Sisters</a> mimics more than one type of wood in the same pendant for a striking look.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/creativesisters/4164124/Necklace_with_Faux_Wood_Pendant_made_out_of_polymer_clay/Jewelry/Necklaces/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Necklace with Faux Wood Pendant made out of polymer clay" itemprop="image" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--114671_product_7696231_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
These hand carved faux stone petroglyph earrings are part of <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/CynthiaBlanton" target="_blank">Cynthia Blanton's</a> Primitives collection. They feature hand-carved polymer clay faux stone panels with images that look like ancient petroglyphs or cave drawings.<br />

This puzzle piece pendant from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/DesertRubble" target="_blank">Desert Rubble</a> was made to resemble old metal scrap hardware. The faux metal finish comes from metallic highlights which were antiqued to make them look old and rustic.<br />

This clock from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/DreamWeaversDesigns" target="_blank">Dreamweavers Designs</a> was made with two polymer clay faux techniques. The brown background and center piece are faux leather and the center plaque is faux turquoise.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/DreamWeaversDesigns/4626775/Faux_leather_and_turquoise_polymer_clay_clock/Housewares/Home_Decor/Clocks" target="_blank"><img alt="Faux leather and turquoise polymer clay clock" itemprop="image" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--91551_product_834955297_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
In just this short post we've seen polymer clay imitate leather, turquoise, metal, stone, wood, and bone! There really are no limits to the things you can create, and re-create with polymer clay!<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jz64p7D2KBY/UDh3JfyK0gI/AAAAAAAAAW0/QLg6zkapuuM/s1600/liquid-clay_001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jz64p7D2KBY/UDh3JfyK0gI/AAAAAAAAAW0/QLg6zkapuuM/s320/liquid-clay_001.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Liquid clay is a useful and versatile addition to the world of polymer clay. It works well as a primary medium when colored with oil-based paint, alcohol inks, or powdered pigments such as Pearl Ex powders. When coloring liquid clay mix only a drop or two at a time until you reach the desired color. It's easy to add too much color and ruin your results. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QwrSVCI0Pjk/UDh3SkwSRrI/AAAAAAAAAW8/BaUN1PociM4/s1600/liquid-clay.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QwrSVCI0Pjk/UDh3SkwSRrI/AAAAAAAAAW8/BaUN1PociM4/s1600/liquid-clay.png" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Batches of colored liquid clay can be stored in small plastic bottles. You can create some really interesting effects if you use squeeze bottles with different sized tips. Another way to store your colored liquid clay is to fill empty paint pot strips (like the kind you get with paint by number kits). Empty paint pots strips are available in most craft stores.<br />
Here are a few uses for liquid polymer clay:<br />
*It can be used as an adhesive to bond layers or pieces of clay together. This works with baked or unbaked clay.<br />
*You can use it to make image transfers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.pcpolyzine.com/0206june/wings.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y4JZJ1sn03M/UDh5p2rXiLI/AAAAAAAAAXE/xAdqCgD58Ac/s1600/liquid_sculpey.png" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This image is linked to a tutorial for making butterfly wings using Translucent Liquid Sculpey</div>
<br />
*You can add inclusions such as mica powders, glitter, or fibers to the liquid clay to create unique effects.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_pqtLA5DEmQ/UDh9_MmlU9I/AAAAAAAAAXY/5RWo07czshA/s1600/fibers.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_pqtLA5DEmQ/UDh9_MmlU9I/AAAAAAAAAXY/5RWo07czshA/s200/fibers.png" width="200" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_3kBlOw9GDM/UDh-AA3gf5I/AAAAAAAAAXg/1X2UKpH5eLs/s1600/glitter.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_3kBlOw9GDM/UDh-AA3gf5I/AAAAAAAAAXg/1X2UKpH5eLs/s200/glitter.png" width="145" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A9Cl2VYpi_M/UDh-CALTY7I/AAAAAAAAAXo/U0yC8zczXwo/s1600/mica-powder.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="130" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A9Cl2VYpi_M/UDh-CALTY7I/AAAAAAAAAXo/U0yC8zczXwo/s200/mica-powder.png" width="200" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*You can use it to seal foils, leafing, and transfers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
*You can even use it to laminate paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One nice thing about liquid clay is that it's self leveling. However, when using it as a sealer be sure not to apply it too thickly or you could end up with a cloudy finish. You can sand or buff the liquid clay after baking to polish and add clarity to the finish. You can make the surface more shiny by applying glaze to cured liquid clay.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Applying Liquid Clay</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can pour liquid clay directly from the bottle or use a toothpick, finger tip, or brush for detailed applications. If using a brush, a high quality hair or synthetic brush works best. Cheaper brushes may lose bristles in the liquid clay. Any brush that's used to apply liquid clay must remain dedicated to that use since you won't be able to clean the liquid clay from the brush. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To care for these brushes wipe the excess clay out of the bristles with a paper towel, stroking the towel in the direction of the bristles, away from the handle. Cover the brushes with a small plastic bag with the handle facing down when stored, This keeps dust and debris out of the brush. Liquid clay can be cleaned up with baby wipes or alcohol.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a while the liquid clay in the brush may begin to thicken and firm up. To recondition the brush work a few drops of liquid clay into the bristles to soften them. Then drag the tip of a toothpick through the bristles to removes the excess clay. Wipe the bristles with a paper towel and repeat as needed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can also use a heat gun to sure liquid clay. You can see when the clay has set: the sheen will disappear indicating that the clay has cured.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Brands of Liquid Clay</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QV0Nldv8Wa4/UDiCTkh5DDI/AAAAAAAAAX8/43CqYUnJbhM/s1600/fimo_001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QV0Nldv8Wa4/UDiCTkh5DDI/AAAAAAAAAX8/43CqYUnJbhM/s320/fimo_001.png" width="272" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fimo Liquid Decorating Gel comes in a 2 oz. bottle and is the clearest of the liquid clays. It has the lowest viscosity and is very flexible after baking. Thick layers will give you a satiny gloss finish and extremely thin layers give you a matte finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/---_7M_91er0/UDiC_q0zoPI/AAAAAAAAAYE/TomUjm4Yn9g/s1600/kato_001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/---_7M_91er0/UDiC_q0zoPI/AAAAAAAAAYE/TomUjm4Yn9g/s320/kato_001.png" width="227" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kato Liquid Polyclay is available in 2 oz. and 8 oz. bottles and offers the second greatest clarity. It has a medium thickness and cures with the most flexibility. Whether used thick or thin it has a satiny gloss finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nuwVToEzycs/UDiD7ZBdqMI/AAAAAAAAAYM/QI288uBIK-w/s1600/sculpey_001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nuwVToEzycs/UDiD7ZBdqMI/AAAAAAAAAYM/QI288uBIK-w/s320/sculpey_001.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Translucent Liquid Sculpey comes in 2 oz. and 8 oz. bottles and is the thickest of the liquid clays. It has the least amount of clarity when cured and can be thinned with Sculpey Diluent. TLS cures hard and firm with a matte finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
So now that you know a little more about liquid polymer clay I hope you'll do some experimenting and have fun with this versatile medium!<br />

In order to participate in one of these Challenges you need to have an active shop on <a href="http://www.artfire.com/" target="_blank">ArtFire</a>, be a member of the<a href="http://www.artfire.com/guilds/polymer_clay_smooshers" target="_blank"> Polymer Clay Smooshers guild</a>, and create up to two entries based on the current theme. The entries need to be handmade and must incorporate polymer clay and they need to be listed in your ArtFire shop. Those guild members who participate in these Challenges will not only enjoy the fun and challenge of pushing their skills a little farther, but will also benefit from the additional promotion of their shops and entries. Your entries will be promoted on the<a href="http://polymerclaysmooshers.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Smooshers blog</a>, the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/PolymerClaySmooshers" target="_blank">Smooshers Facebook page</a>, in the <a href="http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=forums" target="_blank">ArtFire forums</a>, on <a href="http://pinterest.com/creativecritter/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, <a href="http://wanelo.com/CreativeCritters" target="_blank">Wanelo</a>, and if I get enough entries (at least 16) I'll put together a Collection and a video.<br />
<br />
The theme choices for this Challenge are <span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="color: red;">Autumn Colors</span></b></span>, <span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: lime;">Falling For You</b></span>, <span style="color: orange; font-size: large;"><b>Halloween</b></span>, and <span style="background-color: blue; font-size: large;"><b><span style="background-color: white;">Back To School</span></b></span>.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"></span>Anyone can place a vote- you don't have to be a guild member to vote on the theme. You have until August 31st to place your vote. For some reason I can't seem to add a poll to the blog, but you can leave a comment on this post with your choice for the theme.<br />
Once a theme has been chosen you'll have a month to complete your entries and post a link in the <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/guild_forums/index/" target="_blank">Smooshers guild forums</a>. I'll send out a guild bulletin with the winning theme and the due date. I encourage all guild members to vote and enter their creations in these Challenges. Not only is it a lot of fun, but very often you end up learning new skills and improving your craftsmanship! And everyone else gets to enjoy the amazing creations of the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild (all of which will be up for sale)! Thanks for commenting and voting! :-)<br />

Creative Crittershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153067594317645380noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7771373968055547669.post-50199363001165283912012-08-22T09:28:00.000-05:002012-08-22T09:28:00.309-05:00A look at the different brands of polymer clayEach brand of polymer clay has it's own benefits and limitations when it comes to workability, strength, flexibility, firmness, and working time. Personal experience and what the clay is being used to create is the best determining factor when it comes to choosing a brand of clay. <br />
If properly stored (out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources), polymer clay has an indefinite shelf life. You also want to avoid certain types of plastic when storing your clay. Rigid plastic containers can leach the plasticizers from the clay making it brittle. I store my opened clay in plastic sandwich bags which I then put in another container. I keep my colors in separate bags to keep them from accidentally mixing and to keep the clay clean. One of the great things about polymer clay is the fact that it's relatively inexpensive and you don't need a lot of expensive tools to work with it. This makes it a great medium for beginners and children and gives crafters a chance to experiment and find out if this is the right medium for them.<br />
Now on to the different brands of clay.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WvtNudPC9cA/UDPe43k1MYI/AAAAAAAAAVY/hNWUAfYj7Jo/s1600/cernit.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WvtNudPC9cA/UDPe43k1MYI/AAAAAAAAAVY/hNWUAfYj7Jo/s1600/cernit.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: red;">CERNIT<span style="color: black;"> is a clay that is often used by dollmakers. Cernit offers a range of flesh tone colors and the clay has a lifelike translucency after baking</span></span>. It's a very firm clay and can be somewhat difficult to condition, but once it's baked it's quite strong and flexible. You can find more than 60 different colors of Cernit polymer clay<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5LsdA9XESmU/UDPhPL1MpPI/AAAAAAAAAVg/FZGBnmEJmGA/s1600/fimo-classic.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5LsdA9XESmU/UDPhPL1MpPI/AAAAAAAAAVg/FZGBnmEJmGA/s320/fimo-classic.png" width="316" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: lime;">FIMO Classic<span style="color: black;">, originally simply called FIMO, is the oldest and probably most recognized brand of polymer clay. FIMO Classic is very popular among caners who appreciate the strength and resiliency of the clay. Once baked it offers a good degree of flexibility too. FIMO Classic is available in 24 colors and bakes with a matte finish.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fefxm6Nz_pI/UDPiNuc4NvI/AAAAAAAAAVo/WBXRLFj3Xj4/s1600/fimo-soft.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fefxm6Nz_pI/UDPiNuc4NvI/AAAAAAAAAVo/WBXRLFj3Xj4/s320/fimo-soft.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #274e13;">FIMO Soft <span style="color: black;">is one of the easiest clays to condition and also offer the least amount of blade drag when slicing. It remains flexible and strong after baking and has one of the longest open times for working the clay. It also offers superior shelf life for millefiori canes. FIMO Soft is available in more than 50 colors and bakes with a matte finish. </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7giN6dvsAXk/UDPkQMpbNZI/AAAAAAAAAVw/moVSlezPNvU/s1600/kato.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7giN6dvsAXk/UDPkQMpbNZI/AAAAAAAAAVw/moVSlezPNvU/s320/kato.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: purple;">Kato Polyclay <span style="color: black;">is a newer brand of clay and </span></span>was created by the collaboration of polymer clay artist Donna
Kato and Van Aken International, a manufacturer
of modeling compounds. It can be very stiff and takes longer than other clays to condition, but it's very strong and flexible after balking. While most brands of polymer clay are generally baked at 275°F, Kato
polyclay can be cured up to 300°F for 30 minutes per 1/4" (5 mm)
of thickness. It is available in 17 colors and bakes with a light sheen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qd5VOJSPgF4/UDPnEbOgpWI/AAAAAAAAAV8/9069siqbiXU/s1600/pardo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qd5VOJSPgF4/UDPnEbOgpWI/AAAAAAAAAV8/9069siqbiXU/s1600/pardo.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: cyan;">Pardo <span style="color: black;">is the newest clay available and is easy to condition and very strong after baking. It came to the US from Germany and has only been on the market for a few years. It's made from beeswax and other natural ingredients. It comes in reusable packaging and is available in over 70 colors. </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lXmF_pFfZAs/UDPrqNFWRoI/AAAAAAAAAWM/HTBKWG2eK5A/s1600/premo_001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lXmF_pFfZAs/UDPrqNFWRoI/AAAAAAAAAWM/HTBKWG2eK5A/s1600/premo_001.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: cyan;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: blue;">Premo Sculpey <span style="color: black;">is a medium soft clay that bakes with excellent strength and flexibility. It can be stickier than other clays, but it's very easy to condition. It bakes with a slight sheen finish and can be found in more than 30 colors. Premo is my personal favorite when it comes to sculpting and jewelry making. </span></span></span></span>Premo has an "artist's palette" of
colors, which are designed to mix together the same way that artist's
paints mix.<span style="color: cyan;"><span style="color: black;"> Premo holds fine detail and is perfect for </span></span>caning, mokume gane, mica shift, jewelry, home décor and functional item, as well as sculptural pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ge-tn1shGSk/UDPs_Kfls6I/AAAAAAAAAWY/2-eAJ8bhd1E/s1600/sculpey_III.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ge-tn1shGSk/UDPs_Kfls6I/AAAAAAAAAWY/2-eAJ8bhd1E/s320/sculpey_III.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: magenta;">Sculpey III<span style="color: black;"> was one of the first clays to come in individual colors. It's very soft and easy to condition and offers good open time. It bakes with a matte finish but isn't flexible and can be brittle after baking. Sculpey III is best suited </span></span> for projects with density and bulk and can be found in more than 40 colors. This is a good clay to use for covering armatures, or as a base for other projects.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_dR6uaRDTtM/UDPu0v2YOdI/AAAAAAAAAWg/Leyd5N5aImk/s1600/studio-by-sculpey.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_dR6uaRDTtM/UDPu0v2YOdI/AAAAAAAAAWg/Leyd5N5aImk/s320/studio-by-sculpey.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;">Studio Sculpey <span style="color: black;">is softer than Premo and is easy to condition. It feels lighter and less dense than other brands and it bakes with a matte finish. It's available in more than 50 colors and has good strength and flexibility.</span></span><br />
And that's a brief overview of some of the most popular bands of clay available in crafts stores and online.<br />

Creative Crittershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153067594317645380noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7771373968055547669.post-9088465679148001402012-08-20T10:49:00.000-05:002012-08-20T10:49:00.574-05:00The Origins of polymer clayHave you ever wondered where polymer clay came from? I know I have! Like many sculptors, I started with ceramic clay in high school art classes and fell in love with sculpting. However, once I was out of school I no longer had access to a kiln in which to fire my creations, and buying one of my own was simply too expensive. So I started looking for more affordable alternatives to ceramic clay and discovered polymer clay, which came in a rainbow of colors and could be cured right in my home oven.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tg8YfUEADnM/UDBiEhiVqZI/AAAAAAAAATc/kwhtVwR-KPs/s1600/fimo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tg8YfUEADnM/UDBiEhiVqZI/AAAAAAAAATc/kwhtVwR-KPs/s1600/fimo.png" /></a></div>
<br />
I became curious about how this versatile medium was created so I did a little research. Here's what I discovered: In the 1930's "Fifi" Kruse Rehbinder, a German doll artist, developed a moldable material for making her doll heads. Originally the material was called Fifi Mosaik. After the formula was sold to Eberhard Faber in the 1960's it was rebranded as FIMO, the name we're all familiar with now and which can be found online and in craft stores all over.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i7rsfkOG8cs/UDBiK-CgwiI/AAAAAAAAATk/_Zrput_x6PQ/s1600/sculpey.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i7rsfkOG8cs/UDBiK-CgwiI/AAAAAAAAATk/_Zrput_x6PQ/s320/sculpey.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The very first Sculpey product was also introduced in the 1960's. An Illinois company called Zenith Product Company began selling a coating made for industrial use and as a modelling compound for crafting. These days you can find a wide array of Sculpey products in just about any craft store you enter.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4zJ1c4zXne4/UDBjTw2yJ6I/AAAAAAAAATs/8VLzlCSFOyQ/s1600/premo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4zJ1c4zXne4/UDBjTw2yJ6I/AAAAAAAAATs/8VLzlCSFOyQ/s1600/premo.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Polymer clay is an amazing material that continues to undergo changes and improvements. Premo recently changed their formula and added new colors and effects, all of which blend together beautifully so you can create your own custom color mixes. These improvements and additions to formulas, strength, colors, and durability just keep making polymer clay better and more versatile for artists and crafters. Since 2009 all major brands of polymer clay have been free of phthalates and have always been certified as non-toxic, making the clay safe for even young crafters. This is a wonderful medium to encourage children's creativity.<br />
Polymer clay can be enjoyed by everyone from children, to crafters, jewelry makers, sculptors, and even just those looking to replace those ugly handles on their cabinets. Each brand has it's own qualities and benefits, which I'll expand on in future posts. Whether you're new to the world of polymer clay or a skilled clay artist with years of experience, this medium can be enjoyed by anyone!<br />

I've always loved all shades of purple, and I remember asking for a purple octopus for Christmas when I was 3 or 4. My mom and grandparents looked everywhere for a stuffed purple octopus, but never did manage to find one. Now of course I can just create my own, and I do have several purple octopuses made from polymer clay as well as plush versions ;-) I love purple flowers, purple rooms (Gramma painted her room purple and it's been that color all my life), purple dragons- you name it! I've noticed that I'm not alone in my love of the color purple either. Many artists will tell you that's their favorite color, and the members of the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild are no exception. Today I want to showcase some of the purple items the Smooshers have created.<br />
This necklace from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/ValeriesStuff" target="_blank">Valeries Stuff</a> features gray, purple, and orange beads- a striking combination.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/valeriesstuff/1086924/gray_purple_and_orange_polymer_clay_bead_necklace/handmade/jewelry/necklaces/polymer_clay" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--60000--32982_product_1556946357_3_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
I just adore this Purrfectly Purple Cat figurine from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/TTEDesigns" target="_blank">TTEDesigns</a>! It's my favorite animal in my favorite color ;-)<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/TTEDesigns/4632023/Purr-fectly_Purple_Sleeping_Cat_Figurine/Housewares/Home_Decor/Other" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--150000--122698_product_1612300246_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
I love purple and black together, and <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/tonjastreasures" target="_blank">Tonyas Treasures</a> does it beautifully with this Purple Petunias Domed Pendant. The addition of a Swarovski crystal only makes it better!<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/tonjastreasures/3530083/swarovski_crystal_and_purple_petunias_domed_pendant/handmade/jewelry/necklaces/polymer_clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Swarovski Crystal and Purple Petunias Domed Pendant" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--60000--57801_product_1135277529_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
This Purple and Green Swirl Pendant necklace from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/SharpArtbyDawna" target="_blank">Sharp Art by Dawna</a> reminds me a bit of a purple octopus. That looks like a tentacle to me ;-)<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/sharpartbydawna/3105714/large_purple___green_swirl_with_sculpted_border_pendant_necklace/handmade/jewelry/pendants/polymer_clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Purple & Green Swirl with Sculpted Border Pendant Necklace" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--103016_product_657042158_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
This pretty heart necklace from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/SecondSisteratMoArkJewelry" target="_blank">Second Sister MoArk Jewelry</a> has several shades of purple in it, along with lots of great texture.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/SecondSisteratMoArkJewelry/4319490/Three_Heart_Pendant_Necklace/Jewelry/Necklaces/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Three Heart Pendant Necklace" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--90000--83282_product_1746888193_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And finally, a whole bouquet of purple rose pens from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/RosyWriters" target="_blank">Rosy Writers</a>.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/RosyWriters/4045250/Shades_of_Purple_Ink_Pen_Bouquet_-_12_Rosy_Writers/Wedding/Favors/Other_" target="_blank"><img alt="Shades of Purple Ink Pen Bouquet - 12 Rosy Writers" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--119875_product_273985061_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And those are just a few of the pretty purple creations from the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild. Thanks so much for sharing our passion for purple! Many people celebrate Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer, having cookouts, opening their pools, going camping, and having family get togethers. And the weather (in my neck of the woods at least) usually gets pretty warm during this weekend, making a dip in the pool or lake very inviting! This is when we often see the upper 80's or even 90's, and this is when I really miss living right on the lake! The members of The Polymer Clay Smooshers guild have created all sorts of wonderful beach themed clay items, and I wanted to showcase a few of them on this long holiday weekend.<br />
What's a beach without a lighthouse? This Lighthouse ACEO is a micromosaic from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/KaelMijoy" target="_blank">Kael Mijoy</a> with tons of tiny detail.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/kaelmijoy/3268468/lighthouse_aceo__polymer_clay_micromosaic/fine_art/aceo/polymer_clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Lighthouse ACEO, Polymer Clay Micromosaic" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--100730_product_662945919_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And of course mermaids like to hang out at the beach too. This cute little mermaid from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/Kimis-Jewelry-From-The-Heart" target="_blank">Kimis Jewelry From The Heart </a>can be made into a bracelet or a necklace- your choice!<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/Kimis-Jewelry-From-The-Heart/4615132/Green_mermaid_necklace_or_bracelet_you_pick/Jewelry/Necklaces/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Green mermaid necklace or bracelet you pick" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--116395_product_661424118_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And while you're swimming you might be lucky enough enough to discover a seahorse like this one from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/LuvbeadsbyLL" target="_blank">Luvbeads by LL</a>.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/LuvbeadsbyLL/4682741/Polymer_Clay_Seahorse_Pendant/Jewelry/Necklaces/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--119628_product_924340910_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And this pin from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/MortimerInc" target="_blank">Mortimer Inc </a>is called Life's a Beach- just perfect for this week's theme!<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/mortimerinc/3663493/pin__lifes_a_beach/handmade/jewelry/brooches/polymer_clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Pin, Lifes a Beach" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--95283_product_47381305_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
You can also find unique and interesting starfish while at the beach. This purple starfish pendant from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/TinaHoldenDesign" target="_blank">Tina Holden Design </a>is just beautiful!<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/TinaHoldenDesign/3928790/42_mm_Purple_StarfishSea_Star_pendant_handmade_Underwater_collection/Handmade_Supplies/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--60000--43949_product_1216727858_4_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />

I've been going through some personal issues, having problems with my hand (a very bad thing for a sculptor!), and having problems with my internet connection. In spite of all this I'm going to try to keep up with the Smooshers!<br />
This week's theme for the Blog Roll is It's a Bug's Life! I happen to be very fond of most bugs myself. I've always been a bit of a tomboy, so I was out there in the woods with my brothers collecting bugs, watching ants go about their business, and being amazed by spiders spinning their intricate webs. As an organic gardener bugs are vital to the health of my flowers and veggies (and there are far more "good bugs" than "bad bugs" out there). The variety of bugs in nature seems limitless, and the same can be said of bugs made from polymer clay! Here are just a few samples created by the talented members of the Polymer Clay Smooshers guild.<br />
Here are some cute little bookworms from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/AmazingDesigns" target="_blank">Amazing Designs</a>. When I was young I raised earthworms and sold them at the local bait shop, and now I encourage them to call my garden home. They help aerate the soil with their tunnels, and earthworm castings (poop) are excellent fertilizer. I'm also an avid reader, so I really like these particular bookmarks!<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/amazingdesigns/3332410/bookworm_book_marks_for_your_young_avid_reader/handmade/accessories/other" target="_blank"><img alt="Bookworm Book Marks for Your Young Avid Reader" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--90000--81862_product_1311763378_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
Unlike many people, I have no fear of bees. I find them fascinating and I always welcome them in my garden. They're such industrious little creatures! And for all the time I've spent with bees buzzing all around me, I've never been stung. I respect their space, and they don't seem to mind my presence among the flowers. I think they appreciate the delightful floral buffet I offer ;-) This Steampunk bee pendant from<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/DesertRubble" target="_blank"> Desert Rubble</a> is just awesome (and you know this one will never sting- LOL)!<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/DesertRubble/4437013/Steampunk_Jewelry_Urban_Bee_Pendant_Industrial_Wing_Silver_Gold_Copper/Jewelry/Pendants/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Steampunk Jewelry Urban Bee Pendant Industrial Wing Silver Gold Copper" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--90000--82724_product_1141950152_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
Dragonflies are another of my favorite bugs. When I was younger and lived near a lake I would spend all day swimming with the dragonflies cruising over my head. Sometimes they'd even land on my outstretched hand to take a little rest. Now they patrol my vegetable garden and hunt other insects for me. I've got a few regular visitors that hang out with me all summer long. The way they cock their head when I talk to them (yup, I talk to bugs- LOL) I swear they're listening to me. This beautiful necklace from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/DragonflySerenade" target="_blank">Dragonfly Serenade</a> is a wonderful way to show your love of this delightful creature!<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/DragonflySerenade/4033531/In_The_Moment_Dragonfly_Heart_Polymer_Clay_Necklace_and_Earrings/Jewelry/Sets/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--120000--100300_product_2067511422_2_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And who doesn't love butterflies? Dainty, delicate, fluttering through the air, stopping briefly to sip nectar from a flower before floating off again. In spite of their delicate appearance though, these creatures are surprisingly tough. Monarchs fly many miles (all the way from Mexico to the US!) on their yearly migration. Strength and beauty all in a tiny colorful package ;-) This butterfly wing pendant from <a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/Drunkenmimes" target="_blank">Drunkenmimes</a> makes me think of the Monarchs I see fluttering around my back yard every summer.<br />
<a href="http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/Drunkenmimes/3963630/Butterfly_Wing_Pendant_in_Orange_Black_and_Gold/Jewelry/Pendants/Polymer_Clay" target="_blank"><img alt="Butterfly Wing Pendant in Orange Black and Gold" src="http://static.artfire.com/admin/product_images/thumbs/--90000--65098_product_1728421791_thumb_large.jpg" /> </a><br />
And those are just a few of my favorite bugs, as seen in polymer clay. Be sure to check out all the wonderful creations these artists have to offer! You can click on the pictures to be directed to the product listing, and click on the shop name to view everything they have for sale.<br />
Have a great weekend!<br />
