Introducing bluemorningexpressions

bluemorningexpressions

What got you interested in polymer clay as a medium?
I was out of power during a couple hurricanes in '04 and went to the library to find something to read while we still had daylight. I brought home Making Miniature Flowers in Polymer Clay because I was doing some colored pencil sketches of flowers. The more I read about the clay, the more intrigued I became. We got power on and I got clay, the rest is history.

What inspires you to create?
Color! Lots and lots of color. I have beautiful colors to choose from in Florida and the flowers are stunning most of the time. The next best thing is good music.

Do you have a favorite technique?
I adore kaleidoscope caning most of all. I love caning, but I am fascinated by the possibilities of patterns and trying to be smart enough to figure out what components I need to get the best outcome. Not always successfully!

Of everything you have created which is your favorite?
It has to be a sculpture that I did of a colt laying down. My mom is an equine artist and I built her a business card holder and put this colt on it. I did the colt in base sculpy (yeah, I know...) and then hand painted it to create an appaloosa colt. I did the woodworking and attached the acrylic holder to it for her business cards. It was published in Polymer Cafe Magazine.

What do you prefer to make out of polymer clay and why?
Canes and beads.

How do you decide what to make?
I do my beads for production work and I try and do up some jewelry using my beads so that others can see them as a part of a finished piece. I do custom work as well.

Is there something you wish you could make in clay that you have not yet?
I wish I had the time and space to do a large horse sculpture. I love carousel horses and many of my drawings and prints reflect that. I would love to sculpt a carousel horse. One of Denzel's or Illions' - I love their horses and since I will never work in wood, I can do one in clay.

What makes polymer clay a better fit for your products than other mediums?
It is fun, it is colorful, it is versatile. Other than my colored pencils, it is my most favorite thing.

What is your best advice for someone starting out in polymer clay?
Keep squishing, keep smooshing, keep rolling, pounding and stretching it. Read by the experts and there are no mistakes, only interesting sidetracks. I just burnt a batch of beads - I can salvage some of them.
