I've recently discovered how much fun Pearl Ex powders are, and they're my latest favorite technique. They come in a wide range of colors and interference colors (they change color depending on how the light hits them). I love the metallic shimmer they add to clay, and how the same color powder can look different, depending on what color clay you're using. Generally I use a soft brush to apply the powder to unbaked clay. After baking the piece I apply a high gloss glaze to protect the finish and add even more luster. I've also mixed the powder in liquid glaze for a pearlescent effect. My Steampunk Pirate Cat's wing feathers made use of every color of Pearl Ex powder I have!
And my little Dragon Votive Candle holder is an example of the effect that can be created when you mix the powder with glaze and apply it to a glass surface. I also dusted the dragon with some powder before baking him.
I do love bright and shiny things- LOL! And I just can't seem to get enough color! I see all sorts of possibilities for projects I can create using Pearl Ex powders.
